The products made from liquorice due to the flavonoid substances have antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscle of the bronchi. The liquorice contains substances that are structurally and in their effects similar to the adrenal cortex steroid hormones, which have extremely strong anti-inflammatory properties. Several biologically active substances have been extracted from the liquorice that decrease the cholesterol level of the blood and are able to make the cholesterol plaque disappear from the blood vessels. The rhizome and the roots of the liquorice are used in form of infusion, tincture, extract or powder as expectorant for pulmonary diseases characterized by cough; as anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic hyperacid gastritis for stomach and duodenal ulcer; as laxative and water-salt metabolism regulator for diabetes; as component of medical drugs – as diuretic and laxative.
